Birthrite Doula and Photography
I provide different packages for different needs and prices will vary to reflect these. I am a trained doula and an amateur photographer; I can be hired as a doula, a doula and photographer, or just photographer.
Though I am not a professional photographer, I would be glad to photograph your birth. I shoot with a Nixon D7000 SLR; I would ask beforehand that you clarify whether you would prefer my primary role to be that of a photographer or doula. However, if I am hired solely as your doula, my primary focus is on you and your needs and I DO NOT bring my camera
Birth Photography is a special reminder of one of the most important days of your life; your baby’s birth.
Why Hire a Birth Photographer?
The birth of your child is one of the most important days of your life. Hiring a birth photographer frees up your partner or other support persons and ensures you get those memorable moments captured. Without a birth photographer, you may be left with just a few snapshots of the baby after delivery. I will help you capture the amazing process of labor and the incredible birth miracle.
About Birth Photography
Birth and labor are very unpredictable. These are not typical portrait sessions; the lighting is usually dim and it is difficult to plan what is going to happen. I will shoot glimpses of your labor and birth unfolding naturally. Being trained as a birth doula, I will be sensitive to your needs as a laboring woman; I understand my role to document quietly and unobtrusively.
What if I don’t end up making it?
I only take a limited amount of births; I ensure that there is not a scheduled birth two weeks leading up to and two weeks prior to your estimated due date, allowing me the greatest chance of attendance. If I miss your birth due to my error, you will receive a refund minus $100 (just to cover expenses for the interview and prenatal meeting). If I miss your birth because you do not call me in time, there is no refund, but I will be there to capture the moments after the birth. Cancellation of my photography is to occur 30 days before your expected delivery date, and I will refund your money minus $100. If cancellation occurs after the 30 days, there is no refund.
I am concerned about “private shots”; I don’t want graphic pictures!
Not to worry! During our prenatal meeting, we will discuss what you would like photographed and what you do not. Your comfort is my top priority, so I will photograph as much or as little as desired.
What if I have a C-Section? Can I still have a birth photographer?
If you are having a planned Cesarean birth, you will want to ask your doctor beforehand if they allow a photographer in the operating room with you along with any other support persons you have. Many doctors do allow this! If your C-Section is not planned, you may still ask, but it may be unlikely a photographer can go with you. However there are plenty of beautiful moments to capture after the birth. I am more than happy to stay at the hospital and document these first few moments in the postpartum room, or I can come back later to photograph those sweet bonding moments.
